I am both a Studio Sculptor and a specialist in the design and construction of naturalistic land and waterscapes. This combination of interests has inspired an in-depth study of nature, sculpture and the human experience, and reflects my sculptural approach to the landscape features I create as well as my appreciation of nature in my sculptures.
Nature will always be the foundation of my work, as it reminds me of the interrelationship between all living things. I view my work as a journey of discovery, and a sharing of energy, as my thoughts inspire my work and the work inspires my thoughts. With my organic approach, there are inconsistencies in the process, as I am guided by the nature and individual characteristics of my materials, intuitive insights, and past experience. I struggle at times, I rejoice at times, but as my work evolves, I reflect on the world I live in today, the human condition, the state of the planet, and the endless possibilities.
Currently I am working in wood, steel, and stone. Utilizing both a subtractive and additive process where the combined materials merge to form abstract sculptures that convey aspects of human experience in a rapidly changing world.
I love the forest, especially the trees, and appreciate all that they provide. That said I carve reclaimed wood, or pieces of a tree condemned due to development or disease. As I break into the wood, the tree's history and particular characteristics show me what I can and cannot do with it. Often limitations are visible which inevitably transform into opportunities and inspire me along the way. - Dale Dziwenka
I originally introduced steel into my wood carvings for contrast, to represent industry, or technology and our relationship with the environment we choose to live in. Now the work has evolved and the steel is key to the integration of the three materials. I work with raw steel rod as well as found or recycled metal parts during fabrication.
As a young man I spent several years hitchhiking my way around the Pacific and the Atlantic, travelling via sailboat. These days I reconnect with the sea on the local Vancouver Island beaches. A rockhound my entire life, I now hand pick my stones for my sculptures and pack them back home like the treasures they are, worn and weathered, some have traveled great distances before I even pick them up.
OVER THE YEARS I HAVE ENJOYED WORKING WITH A VARIETY OF MATERIALS, ALTHOUGH NONE IS AS SATISFYING AS THE COMBINATION OF WOOD, STEEL AND STONE. EACH HAVING UNIQUE QUALITIES AND HISTORY, I EMBRACE THE CHALLENGE OF INTEGRATION AND EXPLOITATION SIMULTANEOUSLY.
